Students pursuing legal graduate degrees in compliance through Delaware Law School’s online programs come from all over the globe – and so do the faculty members who are teaching them.

“Our professors are unique individuals. Many of them hold high-level compliance positions in well-known companies. They are educating our students while also contributing to the field on a daily basis. Their insight to the subject matter is very valuable,” said Pamela J. Kroh, director of graduate programs.

The faculty includes people who have worked, or are currently working, as compliance officers at PetSmart, Ford Motor Co. and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Michigan schools and more. Kristy Grant-Hart who teaches online from her home base in London, England, formerly served as chief compliance officer for United International Pictures, the joint distributions company for Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures, based in London. Today she runs her own company, Spark Compliance Consulting, and is a star of the profession.

“Widener’s program exposes students to an array of laws and real-world situations so that they graduate ready to lead companies and compliance programs,” Grant-Hart said. “I wish a program like this had existed when I joined the compliance profession.”

Delaware Law School develops relationships with adjunct professors in a number of ways. The school works through the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, which gave Delaware Law its Award for Excellence in 2011, for potential professors. Kroh said she has also met compliance professionals at high-level conferences and ended up pursuing teaching agreements with them.

“I get the opportunity to hear people present at these conferences. That gives me an insight to their teaching style, depth of knowledge and public speaking ability. It’s a great edge to have when we are making faculty decisions,” Kroh said.

Kroh is in frequent contact with the faculty who teach online. She trains them in the online technology, discusses textbook choices, and ensures materials and grades are posted for students. She consults with professors about student evaluations after their classes conclude.

Many faculty enjoy passing on to students what they’ve learned through their own work experiences. James Carroll, former director of corporate compliance at Ford Motor Co., who now works as the company’s Washington counsel, said he tells his students at the beginning of his course that he wants to get to know them, and not just for social reasons.

“I express that it is my hope to get to know them to the point where I can recommend them for positions,” Carroll said. “I want to be a reference for them on their resumes.”
