“May It Please the Court”: A Supreme Court Visit to Delaware Law

4/9/2026

Widener University Delaware Law School recently welcomed the Delaware Supreme Court for a special session featuring two oral arguments, offering the community a rare and valuable window into the state court system and an up‑close look at how complex legal questions are argued at the highest level.

The first case examined whether business buyers were misled during the purchase of a company and whether they should have done more due diligence before finalizing the deal. The second focused on whether Delaware courts can hear a dispute involving out‑of‑state companies connected to a claim in the FTX bankruptcy.

“Watching the Delaware Supreme Court in real time as a Moot Court Honor Society member gave me the opportunity to observe the appellate process and relate it to my own experience, and see how the Delaware Supreme Court conducts their oral arguments,” said Christina Sugden, a second-year Delaware Law student.  “Watching the justices ask questions and engage deeply with the lawyers’ arguments helped me understand how moot court skills apply in actual practice, and it reinforced my desire to continue developing and refining my oral advocacy abilities.”

Arguments were held in the Ruby R. Vale Moot Courtroom, with Chief Justice Collins J. Seitz, Jr. and Justices Gary F. Traynor, Abigail M. LeGrow, and N. Christopher Griffiths on the bench. The gallery included Delaware Law students, Widener undergraduate prelaw students, and LYTE Scholars, a program supporting high‑achieving, first‑generation or underrepresented middle school through college students in their academic and professional pathways.

The visit deepened students’ understanding of Delaware’s influential legal system and reinforced the law school’s commitment to providing meaningful, practice‑ready learning opportunities that bring the law to life.

Delaware Law extends sincere thanks to the Delaware Supreme Court for holding this session on campus. The court’s willingness to engage with our community and demystify the appellate process created an exceptional educational moment for everyone in attendance.
