Volunteer Opportunity with The North Star Network - Counseling Immigrants for Pro Bono Distinction Credit
The North Star Network is a Quaker-founded 501(c)3 charitable organization based in Philadelphia that serves immigrants across the country. It is the only national-level organization that focuses on immigration pathways from the U.S. to Canada: https://thenorthstarnetwork.com/
North Star is looking for law student volunteers who can make a semester-long commitment to conduct remote interviews with the many immigrants who have reached out to us for help. The initial goal of the interviews is (a) toidentify counselees who would be eligible to cross into Canada under exceptions to the Safe Third Country Act (STCA), usually through an anchor relative, and (b) to evaluate whether their circumstances would provide a substantive basis for seeking refugee protection in Canada. Because many counselees will not meet an STCA exception, the interview also seeks to identify possible candidates for an occupational path to permanent residence in Canada or Spain. Students submit post-interview reports summarizing the interview and analyzing counselees’ options. These are reviewed by supervising attorneys and discussed in detail before final recommendations are relayed to the counselee. In cases where an anchor relative entry will be pursued, students will conduct the initial review of counselees’ supporting documentation and help the counselee to prepare for consultations with the Canada-US Border Rights Clinic.
Introductory training will be provided. All work will be remote. In-house North Star attorneys will closely supervise and actively engage with the students in their work.
