New students welcomed

8/19/2016

The new academic year is underway and – in keeping with tradition – Delaware Law School greeted its incoming class with a special “Welcome to the Profession” event. The program initiates new students to the Delaware Law School family with formal remarks and an informal reception.

“This is a ceremony to welcome you to one of the world’s greatest, most noble professions: the profession that exists for the pursuit of justice,” Dean Rod Smolla told the students, gathered in the Ruby R. Vale Moot Courtroom.

Students also heard from alumna Yvonne Takvorian Saville ’95, alumna Renae B. Axelrod ’91, president of the alumni association, and 3L Morgan Madden, president of the Student Bar Association.

“You are here at Delaware Law because we at Delaware Law have confidence in you. I know it may seem overwhelming but believe me, you can do this,” Axelrod said.

Madden encouraged the newcomers to get involved and seize opportunities available through organizations, service programs and mentoring outlets. She told them not to be afraid of new challenges. “We’re all here together. We’re all going through the course load and have the same professors,” she said of the full student body. “You’re going to be OK. We’re here to help you.”

Takvorian Saville advised students to form networks early, start looking for their passion, and seize opportunities to give back. “Learn and be dedicated to doing some pro bono work, not just here, but on the outside. It is extremely important,” she said.

The event kicked off orientation week, which also includes instruction designed to help students achieve success in law school. Topics include active reading strategies, case briefing, as well as note taking and outlining – all which can be different in law school. Students also attend a session on the intersection of law, personal morality, and the character and fitness standards of the profession.
